Children’s House students have been invited by artists and Children’s House parents Sarah Zuckerman & Vanessa Monfrieda to participate in a group art exhibit, “Proyecto Corazon” (Project Heart) at the Earth House Collective in downtown Indianapolis.
The exhibit, which opens Friday, February 12, will feature work by a number of Indianapolis artists. The Children’s House contribution will be an installation of birds, crafted from beautiful Nepalese Lotka and other exotic and decorative papers. Each bird will contain a Haiku or written statement about the artist’s perspective on LOVE. The birds will be offered for sale at $15 each. Only after purchasing a bird will anyone be able to read the secret message. All proceeds from these sales will benefit the Children’s House art fund.
“We are thrilled to have this opportunity,” says Children’s House Art Teacher, Joni Back-Bubenzer. “Besides providing students the chance to show their work in public, it will also bring attention to our school.” According to Bubenzer, the students have been working diligently on their birds for several weeks. “While we have been using some books to provide visual aid, each of these birds will ultimately be a unique work of art. They are absolutely beautiful!”
In addition to this art project, Reading Room and Senior Class students have participated in a Haiku workshop, led by Reading and Language Arts Teacher, Mary Sexson, who noted, “This has given the students a unique opportunity to study the form of Haiku in depth. They read, listened to, wrote and shared Haiku poems. It has been wonderful to watch them discover the beautiful package that 17 syllables can deliver.”
All parents, friends and family are invited to the opening night festivities at The Earth House Collective. For more information, please contact The Children’s House, or visit the Earth House website: http://www.earthhousecollective.org/
